Baca Citizenship Drive of 2007

On July 28, 2007 The Law Offices of Ruben Salazar provided pro bono legal immigration services at the behest of U.S. Congressman Joe Baca (CA 43rd Dist). Many local community members successfully applied for United States citizenship at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Rialto, CA.

The intent of this free Citizenship Drive of 2007 was to educate, encourage, and assist local Legal Permanent Residents to apply for naturalization in order to fully participate in the political process.

Throughout the day, Mr. Salazar and his legal Assistant, Darwin Rivera, personally answered legal questions and provided legal advise about the application process. Over 250 persons attended this successful event, which was provided free to the public.

Time was taken out to meet and greet the Congressman and his wife Barbara Baca, and to discuss other legal issues with the Congressman and other attendees.

The U.S. naturalization process is fraught with unsuspecting traps for the unwary. Many applicants have criminal convictions (which constitute either aggravated felonies or crimes against moral turpitude) that prevent them from showing "good moral conduct," a required element to become a citizen. Other applicants have engaged in non-criminal conduct which makes them ineligible for citizenship. Yet others have questions about the required English and civics test necessary to become a U.S. citizen. For this reason, consulting a good immigration lawyer before applying is strongly advised.
